Abstract

This study aims to examine the development and characteristics of Middle English with a literature study approach. Middle English, spoken between the 12th and 15th centuries, was an important transitional phase in the history of the English language, linking Old English with Modern English. Through the analysis of various literatures, this study identifies the phonological, morphological, syntactic, and lexical changes that occurred during this period, as well as the influence of Latin, Norman, and Scandinavian on the development of Middle English. In addition, this study discusses important texts from the period, such as the works of Geoffrey Chaucer, which provides a deeper insight into the use and structure of Middle English. The results show that despite regional variations in Middle English, significant changes in grammar and vocabulary became the forerunner of Modern English as we know it today. This research is expected to provide a better understanding of the evolution of the English language, as well as its contribution to the study of historical linguistics and English language teaching at the academic level
